Why Path Lighting Matters

Path lighting does more than illuminate a walkway, it defines your landscape, enhances curb appeal, and keeps guests safe after dark. A well-designed path lighting system transforms an ordinary yard into a stunning nighttime environment that reflects the quality of your home.

Types of Path Lights

Not all path lights are created equal. Here's what to consider:

  • Spike Mount vs. Surface Mount: Spike mount lights are the most common and easiest to install in garden beds and lawns. Surface mount options work well on hardscape surfaces like pavers or concrete.
  • Material: Solid brass path lights offer superior durability and develop a beautiful patina over time. Composite or aluminum options are lighter but may not hold up as well in harsh climates.
  • Low-Voltage vs. Solar: Low-voltage (12V) systems are the professional standard, they're reliable, consistent, and fully controllable via a transformer. Solar lights are convenient but can be inconsistent in performance, especially in shaded areas.

Planning Your Path Lighting Layout

A great path lighting design starts with a solid plan:

  • Spacing: Place path lights every 6–8 feet along the walkway for even, balanced illumination. Avoid over-lighting subtle is better.
  • Lumen Output: For path lighting, 100 – 280 lumens per fixture is typically ideal. Too bright creates glare; too dim defeats the purpose.
  • Transformer Sizing: Calculate your total wattage (number of fixtures × watts per fixture) and choose a transformer rated at least 20–25% above that total to allow for future expansion.
  • Alternating Sides: Stagger lights on alternating sides of the path for a natural, professional look rather than placing them directly across from each other.

Installation Tips

For a clean, long-lasting installation:

  • Wire Gauge: Use 12-gauge wire for runs over 100 feet; 16-gauge works for shorter runs. Undersized wire causes voltage drop and dim fixtures.
  • Burial Depth: Bury low-voltage wire at least 6 inches deep to protect it from shovels and foot traffic.
  • Wiring Method: A home-run (home run) wiring layout — where each fixture runs directly back to the transformer — provides the most consistent voltage. Daisy-chain wiring is simpler but can cause the last fixtures on the run to appear dimmer.
  • Connections: Use waterproof wire connectors or direct-burial wire nuts to prevent corrosion at every splice point.

Finishing Touches

Once installed, set your transformer timer to turn lights on at dusk and off a few hours after midnight to balance ambiance with energy efficiency. Walk the path after dark to check for any dark spots or overly bright areas, and adjust fixture placement as needed.
